Arcane: Behind the Cosplay Act

The Danish Cosplay Championship is held at J-Popcon in Copenhagen and ever since I went to this show for the first time in 2010, it has been my favorite event. I’ve always been in awe of the creativity on stage within the Danish community and it was inspiring to finally be a part of.

Like last year’s performance, this was a collaboration between Myosotis Arvencis and I. We based the act on the final scene between Vi and Jinx in the destroyed warehouse from the Arcane show. We had to make some creative changes to make it work without the additional characters of Caitlyn and Silco. The challenge of creating such a scene is to both capture the audience who know the story and those who haven’t engaged with the media. All in less than 3 minutes.

After creating the script we went to my long time friend and photographer Rebecca (Alo.pus) to record in a small studio. We each did the lines for our characters and in addition, I recorded a single line as Caitlyn. Two of our friends also lend their voices for Silco and Vander.

Several of our friends also gave a helping hand in realizing our vision for the backdrop, which you can see in the video recording below. To see more of Sophie’s Vi cosplay, you can find her on Instagram and you can read more about my Jinx cosplay here. While we didn’t win a preliminary spot for the international competitions, I was awarded the “best make-up” prize, which was an honor.

I’ve discovered that being on stage brings a moment of peace from my social anxiety. I am by no means an actor, but it was fun to realize these characters through both crafting and acting. And above all cosplay should be a fun hobby.

Looking back, there are several changes we could have made, but I think that feeling is inevitable and we can’t change it now. However, I find myself simply enjoying the experience, appreciating the people we met at the show and looking forward to using it as inspiration for the next time I go on a stage.
